Although we all love London in the summer, sometimes you do just need a weekend away from the buzz of the city or even just a daytrip to somewhere in the country.
We’re fully aware that when you think of England, the word vineyard certainly doesn’t come to the forefront of your mind but we really think it should, as visiting some of England’s finest wineries is fast becoming one of our favourite pastimes. With every year that passes, we are seeing more and more quality wines being produced in the UK, particularly of the sparkling variety.
Without getting too technical, the composition of the soil in parts of the UK lends itself beautifully to growing vines, particularly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – the three grape varieties used to make Champagne. So it’s no wonder the quality of wine (particularly sparkling wine) being produced in this country is receiving rave reviews by wine experts.
And speaking of great reviews, our friends down at Nutbourne Vineyards have recently been awarded their third Gold Medal in the International Wine & Spirit Competition with their Nutty Brut 2013, Traditional Method Sparkling Wine. Last year they were the first ever English wine to achieve a gold medal for their Nutbourne Sussex Reserve 2013 and prior to that their Nutty Brut 2011 was one of only two Gold Medal winners.
You’ll be pleased to hear that Nutbourne is just a short drive from London and offers tours of the vineyard and the winery followed by tastings. There is no entrance charge and visitors are welcome to walk among the vines, enjoy the picturesque views across the Sussex Countryside and visit the windmill tower to taste and buy the wines.
