Social Media – No longer a nice to have

It’s strange to think that just over a decade ago, using social media as a tool for finding your next career move was unheard of and yet today it’s essential. Whether you’re looking for a chef job or a receptionist job in London, it really doesn’t matter, your presence on social media is really important.

For many of you, you’ll already have personal Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts (amongst other social channels) and although you can use all three to help during your job search, the main social channel you should be focusing on is LinkedIn. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is to have a LinkedIn profile. Before you think we are receiving some kind of under-the-table payment for saying this, we really aren’t!

  • Let recruiters find you – looking for a job can be stressful at the best of times but by creating a LinkedIn profile, you make yourself easily searchable by recruiters and could enhance your chances of finding a job. Gone are the days where recruiters only rely on job applications via job boards to source candidates. Every traditional recruiter is now a headhunter, using every channel available to source talent in a candidate short market.
  • Expand your network – there are no limits to what you can achieve through your professional network whether it be business opportunities, job prospects or to simply stay abreast on what’s happening in your industry.
  • Search for jobs – many companies and recruiters now use LinkedIn as a job board which means you’ll be able to find jobs advertised that you can’t find elsewhere. It is also a lot easier to apply for a job via LinkedIn as it uses your profile as a CV or sorts and doesn’t require the sometimes timely process of inserting all your details and writing a cover letter.
  • Promote your personal and professional brand –By adding relevant industry material and news to your profile, people will automatically see you are an expert in your field and hopefully remember your brand over others.
