Church Road

The good news is that it’s still in the hands of Phil Howard “The Square” and Rebecca Mascarenhas “Kitchen W8”. Based in Barnes, South London, "Church Road" as it’ll now be called, will feature Sam Astley-Dean as Head Chef and Alan Parry running front of house, both of which were most recently working alongside Howard at Michelin starred Elystan Street restaurant.

Top dishes:

  • Wilted late summer greens with a cashew cream and a soft herb dressing
  • Chargrilled monkfish tail with roasted late summer tomatoes and pesto
  • Roast grouse with roasted pear, elderberries, Hasselback potatoes and gravy

Mama Fuego

Last year they opened Abuelo in Covent Garden. Now the team behind that Antipodean-meets-South American coffee house and kitchen are opening their second venue, in Greenwich Peninsula.

Mama Fuego is an exploration of a shared heritage of pastoral culture in South America and Australia, focusing on produce and small farmers. The 70-seater restaurant will be open for all-day dining. The restaurant will feature a stone fireplace, communal banqueting table and a hydroponic cress and edible flower farm, from which chefs, bakers and bartenders will cut their ingredients needed to prepare the restaurants food and drink.

Top dishes:

  • Provoleta - Hot melted provolone cheese with jalapeno cornbread
  • Duck egg tagliatelle, sorrel, lemon thyme & garlic butter, burrata
  • Sriracha Bloody Mary baked eggs, goats’ cheese, chorizo (or spinach) and toast

Sweet Chick

Sweet Chick – a US fried chicken restaurant backed by American rapper Nas – is opening its first British branch this week. The restaurant, which already has 5 branches in the USA, will serve the brand’s famous fried chicken (soaked overnight in sweet tea-stained brine) and waffles, alongside some Southern-inspired dishes such as biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits and mac 'n cheese. Sounds like an interesting mix which we're looking forward to sampling soon!

Plu, a new fine dining restaurant opening at the end of this month in St John's Wood, will be serving up a modern international menu with a French accent. Elliot Moss, who is heading up the restaurant, will be offering a single tasting menu every night using French fine dining techniques. The menu is still in development, however judging from Plu’s colourful Instagram page, guests can expect everything from floral salads to sweet and sour quail and scallops with ox cheeks.

Top sampling dishes:

  • Orkney Diver Scallop - ceviche, glazed, blackberry, gin, elderflower, zalotti blossoms
  • Le Salade: Automne "King and Queen" - king crab, pear, celery, nasturtium, bloody mary sorbet
